Barca, Cadiz score late La Liga winners
Robert Lewandowski scored in injury time by winning 1-0 at Valencia and putting Barcelona on par with Real Madrid at the top of the Spanish Liga.
The Polish forward’s 13th league goal in 12 days saved Xavi Hernandez’s side from another setback three days after retiring from the Champions League group stage for the second consecutive year.
Lewandowski made up for his teammates’ poor result by stretching his right shoe to direct a pass from Raphiha with a lob for Saturday’s final breakthrough.
Raphiha and Ferran Torres, Barcelona players have spent more than 110 million euros (171 million Australian dollars) to win in the last year, both losing golden chances in the 85th after joining the bench.
But the link between Rafhinha and the new star of the team was enough to take the three points at Mestalla.
“It is a very important victory for us, especially for the way we won,” said Xavi.
“We played nervously today. We tried to disconnect and leave the Champions League, but we could see that we are still impressed. In any case, we deserved the victory, even if it came in the last seconds ”.
Real Madrid can regain the lead when they face Girona on Sunday.
For the second consecutive match, Atletico suffered the pain of the last football.
Cadiz beat them 3-2 after Ruben Sobrino scored a cross just before the final whistle, bringing the competition in favor of the hosts.
The last-second defeat came just three days after Atleti’s elimination from the Champions League after Yannick Carrasco scored a penalty and two of his teammates’ rebound attempts failed in the final kicks of the match.
Cadiz, for which Socceroos winger Awer Mabil was an unused substitute, led 2-0 until Joao Felix triggered a late comeback. His scissor kick was converted into his own goal by Luis Hernandez in the 85th minute and Felix equalized with a long drive in the 89th minute.
But a last-minute boost from Cadiz paid off when Sobrino released the winner at the Nuevo Mirandilla stadium for the club’s first home win threatened by relegation this season.
Elsewhere, Rayo Vallecano beat Sevilla 1-0 and Almeria beat Celta Vigo 3-1 in comeback.
