Apple Watch blood oxygen sensor is as reliable as ‘medical-grade device’

As evidenced by MyHealthyApple on TwitterA new study shows that Apple Watch Series 6 can reliably detect states of reduced oxygen saturation in the blood with SpO2 less than 90% compared to a medical-grade pulse oximeter.

Apple Watch Series 6 and later models come with a blood oxygen sensor and an app to conveniently measure blood oxygen saturation so users can better understand their fitness and overall well-being.

Commercial smartwatch with pulse oximeter detects short-term hypoxemia and a standard medical device: validation study

We investigated how a commercially available smartwatch that measures peripheral blood oxygen saturation (SpO2) can detect hypoxemia compared to a medical-grade pulse oximeter.

Apple Watch Series 6 can reliably detect states of reduced oxygen saturation in the blood with SpO2 less than 90% compared to a medical-grade pulse oximeter. The technology used in this smartwatch is advanced enough for indicative SpO2 measurement outside the clinic.
