Apple released iOS 16.1 on Monday which introduces the iCloud Shared Photo Library, making it easy to update family photos. This version also adds support for third-party apps in live activities, support for Apple Fitness + on iPhone even if you don’t have an Apple Watch, and includes other features and bug fixes for your iPhone.
iOS 16.1 includes:
ICloud shared photo library
• Separate library for seamlessly sharing photos and videos with up to five other people
• Setup rules allow you to easily contribute previous photos based on start date or people in photos when setting up or joining a library
• Library filters to quickly switch between viewing the Shared Library, My Library, or both libraries together
• Shared edits and permissions allow anyone to add, edit, bookmark, caption, and delete photos
• The Sharing in Camera option allows you to choose to send captured photos directly to the Shared Library or to enable a setting for automatic sharing when other participants are detected nearby via Bluetooth
Live activity
• Third-party app live activities are available on Dynamic Island and on the lock screen for iPhone 14 Pro models
Fitness +
• Apple Fitness + is supported on iPhone even if you don’t have an Apple Watch
Wallet
• Key sharing allows you to securely share cars, hotel rooms and other keys in Wallet using messaging apps like Messages and WhatsApp
Home
• Matter, the new connectivity standard for the smart home, is supported allowing a wide variety of smart home accessories to work together across ecosystems
Recharge of clean energy
• New setting that can attempt to reduce your carbon footprint by selectively charging when low-carbon electricity is available
Books
• Player controls are automatically hidden at the start of play
This update also includes bug fixes for your iPhone:
• Deleted conversations can be viewed in the conversation list in Messages
• Dynamic Island content is not available when using Reachability
• CarPlay may fail to connect when using a VPN app
