17 killed in Russian strikes on the Ukrainian city of Zaporozhye

Kyiv: At least 17 people were killed and dozens wounded overnight in Russian strikes on the southeastern Ukrainian city of Zaporozhye, Ukraine’s defense ministry said.

The Ukrainian regional governor of Zaporizhia, Alexander Starukh, said: “Russian missiles partially destroyed a nine-story building. Eight people were rescued. There may be more people under the rubble.

Although the city is under Ukrainian control, it is part of the region Russia claimed it annexed last month, the BBC reported.

Condemning Russia’s actions, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called the shelling “again merciless strikes against peaceful people.”

Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022.
